Robert was nominated Best Actor for "Chaplin". Jodie Foster presented. The other nominees in this category were Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Al Pacino and Stephen Rea. Robert lost to Al Pacino who won for "Scent of a Woman". Many critics thought this was a big mistake and that Robert was the obvious winner. Robert and co-star in "Heart and Souls", Alfre Woodard, presented the award for Best Sound that went to "The Last of the Mohicans".

Robert was nominated Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for "Chaplin".

The event was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 23.

Golden Globe Awards 1993

Robert WON the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor award for "Ally McBeal". The event took place at the Shrine Auditorium on March 11. Robert was also one of the presenters and introduced a special salute to Actors of 1000 Faces. Calista Flockhart and Peter MacNicol were also nominated, as well as the whole "Ally McBeal" cast for Best Comedy Series.

S.A.G. Awards 2001

Robert WON for Best Supporting Actor in "Ally McBeal". The event took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 21. When Robert was announced he got a standing ovation as he approached the stage. He was also a presenter and announced "Wonder Boys", nominated for Best Drama. Bob Dylan won the award for Best Original Song with 'Things Have Changed' from "Wonder Boys".

Dick Clark: "Is there anything you would like to say to the people watching television now who are very supportive, and your fans?"
Robert: "Well, it's just meant... it's really meant the world to me that people have been so supportive and come up to me on the street and said that they are rooting for me. And, you know, I have been doing my part lately, and you know that support really means a lot, particularly... and something like this, to be acknowledged is really good. All these things are esteem building." 



 

Golden Globe Awards 2001

Robert was nominated Best Supporting Actor Of The Year In A Comedy for "Ally McBeal". The awards were presented on February 25. Sean Hayes in "Will & Grace" won. Robert was also a part of the presentation of the new 'Brandon Tartikoff award', this year honoring TV producer (and "Ally McBeal" creater/writer) David E. Kelly. Robert spoke a little about the music on "Ally McBeal". Then he introduced Vonda Shepard and told David this song was especially for him. A surprised David E. Kelley got to hear Vonda sing Rod Stewart's 'This Old Heart of Mine' and Rod himself came up and joined in a duet with her. The winners for the American TV Guide Award are voted on by millions of TV viewers, either on-line or on special ballots in the TV Guide magazine.

Robert was nominated Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for "Ally McBeal" on July 12. The awards were broadcast live from the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles on November 4, after having been postponed two times due to the 9/11 terrorist attack. Robert's co-star, Peter MacNicol, won. The only time Robert was on camera was when he was interviewed by Joan Rivers.

Emmy Awards 2001

Robert was honored with a Career Achievement Award at the Music Box Theater on October 6, by the Chicago Film Festival director, Michael Kutza. He attended the festival together with girlfriend Susan Levin and "The Singing Detective" director Keith Gordon. Prior to the screening of "The Singing Detective" the award ceremony took place on stage. Movie clips from "Chaplin", "Natural Born Killers", "Pound", "Home For The Holidays", "Restoration", "Two Girls and A Guy", "Wonder Boys", and "The Singing Detective" were shown and then Robert was interviewed onstage by film critic Richard Roeper. After the interview, he was presented the award and gave a short speech. Fans were present, of course, and reportedly had a great time.

Career Achievement Award 2003

Robert was honored with Harvard University's annual Man Of The Year award on February 19, by Hasty Pudding Theatricals. The award is given to performers who have made a "lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment." As custom for this special ceremony, Robert was subjected to a series of 'tasks' before receiving the pot: Dressed up as Chaplin he had to convince two Harvard students dressed in drag that he was in love with them; Act as a therapist to a neutered bulldog; Sing a specially written song about his future career. At the press conference he revealed that he was working on a record for Sony Classical.

Hasty Pudding: Man Of The Year 2004

Robert was honored with the Male Star of The Year Award by ShoWest. The event took place at the Paris Hotel Ballroom in Las Vegas on March 13. In his acceptance speech he quoted New York's Gov. Elliot Spitzer, saying, "I go forward with the belief, as others have said, that as human beings our greatest glory consists not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall." ShoWest co-managing director, Mitch Neuhauser, on why Robert was awarded: "For almost four decades, Robert Downey Jr. has been entertaining moviegoers with a resume of films that is as diverse and impressive as anyone could imagine." On March 11, Robert and Ben Stiller also presented the trailer and some movie clips from "Tropic Thunder" to the ShoWest audience.
